Social Enterprises Ghana, a network of 1,000 social enterprises, is advocating for the swift adoption and implementation of the Ghana Social Enterprise Policy, a move aimed at driving investments and growth within the sector.
The group revealed that social enterprises contribute over US$4 billion to Ghana’s GDP annually, accounting for more than 300,000 social enterprise entities across the country.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement event, the executive director of Social Enterprises Ghana, Edwin Zu Cudjoe, highlighted the organisation’s ongoing efforts in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and other stakeholders.
The aim is to advance the passage of the Ghana Social Enterprise Policy, which seeks to support these enterprises and promote investments in the sector.
“Our event today is to bring back to the table relevant stakeholders, ministries, and government agencies to dialogue about how we can push this policy into full adoption and implementation, bringing on board all the best ideas,” said the Executive Director.
Despite efforts to pass the policy, challenges have arisen.
“The principal challenge is how to engage and convince the sponsoring ministry to see the value in the many social enterprises that operate across the country. These organisations are led by young women, persons with disabilities, and returnees, all making significant impacts in job creation and addressing environmental issues,” he added.
Social enterprises have been identified as key players in addressing Ghana’s environmental concerns, such as illegal mining (galamsey), and are also vital in creating employment opportunities for underserved communities.
Cudjoe emphasised that the adoption of the policy would strengthen the sector’s ability to address such issues while contributing significantly to the country’s economy.
Social Enterprises Ghana has called on the government, particularly the Ministry of Trade and Industry, to fast-track the adoption and implementation of the policy to further harness the potential of social enterprises in creating opportunities for young people, women, and persons with disabilities.
