The paramount chief and president of the Damongo traditional area, Damongowura Yakubu Imoro Gbeadese I has made an urgent call on the judicial committee of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs on the Damongo chieftaincy litigation, to expedite the judicial process and promptly deliver judgement on the matter.
Speaking at a press conference in Damongo on (Friday) 19 July 2024, the paramount chief expressed worry about the delay of the matter which is disturbing the peace in the area, adding that it is causing tension in Damongo and the entire kingdom.
He indicated that justice should be swiftly served to uphold the integrity of Gonja customs and traditions.
“I reaffirmed my unwavering commitment to peace and unity within the Damongo traditional area. I urge all parties involved to uphold the rule of law and refrain from actions that may disrupt our community’s harmony,” Gbeadese assured.
“We emphatically rejected claims of legitimacy made by Abuasewura Kelly who forcefully assumed the title of Damongowura. According to Gonja customs and traditions, Damongowura Yakubu Imoro Gbeadese I remains the rightful paramount chief dully recognised and affirmed by Yagbonwura Sulemana Tuntunba I and members of the Gonja traditional council on 21 April 2016 at the Japka Palace.
He further stated that the recent declaration by Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I recognising Abuasewura Kelly as Damongowura on 23 November 2023, disregards the pending case on the Damongo Chieftaincy matter before the judicial committee of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs.
According to him, the action of Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto not only disrespects the earlier decision by the late Yagbonwura Tuntunba Boresa, but also contradicts the long-standing tradition of the Damongo traditional area.
Brief Background
The Damongo Chieftaincy litigation started in 2016 after the death of the late Damongowura Lermu.
Following this, Budamawura Yakubu Imoro was pronounced as the new successor, but the decision by Yagbonwura Tuntunba Boresa did not go down well with Abuasewura Kelly who took the matter to the then Northern Regional House of Chiefs.
The case was later referred to the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs after the creation of the region. It was handled by a judicial committee which completed its work but could not pass judgement after two attempts for some reasons.
Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I in 2023, upon the pending judgment, appointed Abuasewura Kelly Seidu as the new legitimate Damongowura.
There have since been clashes between two brothers from the same Dangepe Royal gate, but on 24 April 2024, Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto issued a statement announcing that he has cancelled the function of the judicial committee of the Regional House of Chiefs.
