The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has responded to allegations made by Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, regarding alleged malfeasance at the Akom Axle Load Station.
In a statement issued on Monday (16 December), the Authority clarified that some of the claims made by the MP were inaccurate and painted a misleading picture of the events.
The GHA emphasized that the Axle Load Control Programme is aimed at protecting the country’s road infrastructure by preventing vehicle overloading, not generating revenue.
The allegations were centered on a supervisor at the Akom station, who had initially increased fines collection but was later found to have discrepancies in reported figures during audits. Investigations revealed that data had been manipulated, with some transactions deleted to hide irregularities.
The GHA explained that the supervisor’s six-month contract expired in November 2024, and while she reapplied for the position, she has yet to address audit queries regarding her actions. The Authority reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, noting that other staff implicated in similar irregularities have faced interdiction or dismissal, with cases referred to investigative authorities.
The GHA assured the public of its commitment to transparency and to maintaining the integrity of its operations.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
