Rita Oppong Yeboah: Breast cancer isn’t spiritual

Rita Oppong Yeboah, a Health Promotion Officer at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, has issued a strong warning to patients, urging them to avoid self-medicating and mismanaging breast cancer—a disease she insists is best addressed through professional medical care.

Her call comes as breast cancer awareness gains momentum this October, highlighted by an event held by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in Sunyani, aimed at encouraging early detection and proper treatment.

“Breast cancer is a reality, but it is not a spiritual issue,” Yeboah told media during a breast cancer screening event organised by COCOBOD’s Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regional offices.

“Patients must pursue medical treatment rather than rely on spiritual remedies,” she stressed, adding that early diagnosis greatly improves treatment options and outcomes.

Yeboah’s advice centres on proactive health measures. She encouraged women to perform regular self-examinations and to consult healthcare professionals immediately if they detect any lumps or abnormalities.

“While not every lump is cancerous, it is vital to consult healthcare professionals for screening to assess the nature of the lump,” she explained.

Alongside her appeal, Michael P K Asumanu, Regional Administrator for Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo at COCOBOD, expressed alarm over the rising breast cancer cases in Ghana.

He highlighted the ongoing challenges with public awareness, calling for more vigorous campaigns to inform the public about the risks of breast cancer and the life-saving benefits of early detection.

This COCOBOD-led event, held under the theme “Screen Smart, Early Detection, Brighter Future,” drew 63 staff and community members for screenings and an educational seminar.

Organisers hope the initiative will inspire more women to prioritise regular check-ups, helping to reduce the rising breast cancer rates across the region.
