President of Ghana Athletics Bawa Fuseini says the 4×100 relay team for the 2024 Olympic Games is ‘one of the finest Ghana has ever assembled’ as Team Ghana prepares for a first Olympic medal in Paris.
The track and field events at the Paris Olympic Games are scheduled for 1-11 August 2024.
Rasheed Saminu and Ibrahim Fuseini will run on the curves, Benjamin Azamati on the back straight and Joe Paul as the anchor of the quartet in Paris.
The team, comprising Ibrahim Fuseini, Isaac Botsio, Edwin Gadayi, and Abdul Rasheed Saminu, secured the gold medal beating rivals Nigeria at the African Athletics Seniors Championships in Douala in June.
The quartet raced to the finish line at 38.63s, while close contenders Nigeria ended the race at a time of 38.84s.
Speaking on TeamTalk on Saturday (July,6) Bawa Fuseini said ‘this has been one of the finest team we’ve ever assembled for an Olympics.
“Looking at the performance, the time, looking at the standards. The team has been number one in Africa for three years- and we cemented that status when we went to Cameroon.
Being the number one in Africa, also puts fear on other countries that hey, Ghana is there. People now recognize that Ghana has a quality 4×100 relay team – he added.
Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu secured spots at the Games through the World Athletics Ranking System, which ended on June 30. Azamati will compete in his second Olympics, while Saminu will make his Olympic debut in the 200m event, having met the entry standard.
Edwin Gadayi, the 2024 GNPC Fastest Human, will join forces with Joseph Paul Amoah, the 200m African Games Gold Medalist, Fuseini Ibrahim, Benjamin Azamati, and Isaac Botsio to compete in the 4x100m relay event.
