President Ruto says there is no airport deal with Adani Group, but there will be a private-public agreement for its extension.
Adani Group is one of India‘s largest and most politically influential conglomerates but has denied claims of fraud and insider trading.
Adani Group proposed US$2.5 billion to lease the airport for 30 years, even after experts recommended the government put out a public tender to expand the airport.
Ruto didn’t mention a deal with Adani, and instead harped on the fact that the airport would not be sold. He claimed that the government is still looking for investors to upgrade the airport.
“I want to persuade you Kenyans, don’t buy into fake news,” he said. “Don’t buy into the propaganda,” Ruto claimed that the government is still looking for investors to upgrade the airport under a public-private partnership — but that the process would be handled in a transparent and accountable manner.
“Let’s be honest Kenyans, the airport we have in Nairobi is made of canvas,” he said. “It is the reason why we need to work with investors to have a new airport,” President Ruto added.
Kenya Airports Authority received an investment proposal from Adani but has not yet received a response to Senator Richard Onyonka’s demand for a statement.
President Ruto has been under immense pressure after six weeks of youth-led protests, and last week announced cabinet changes for a new broad-based government. He tried to rally the country to come together on Sunday.
