The managing director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah has said it would be unfair to ban small scale mining in the country.
His comment is in reference to calls by stakeholders for a ban on small-scale mining due to the pollution of some water bodies.
Awuah argues that the ban could deprive other small scale miners who are legitmately operating of their livelihood.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on (27 September) he said ”we are equally concerned, but we feel strongly that the proposition for an outright ban is unfair and would not work because in the past it did not work and we don’t think that it’s going to work at this time.”
” So we need to think outside the box and that thinking outside of the box requires consensus building, which is what the ministerial committee is currently engaged in,” Awuah said.
