49 young women benefit from MIIF-UMaT WoMCom scholarship scheme

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), in partnership with the George Grant University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has awarded fully funded scholarships to 49 young women under its Women in Mining Communities (WoMCom) Scholarship scheme.

This initiative, launched by MIIF, is designed to support 1,000 women from mining communities over the next ten years.

Speaking at the announcement of the first batch of beneficiaries, MIIF CEO Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng emphasised the fund’s dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion within the mining sector.

He noted that the scholarship program represents a significant step toward closing the gender gap and empowering women to take up leadership roles in mining and STEM-related fields.

For his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, also charged the awardees to be steadfast in their stands in changing the status quo and going beyond the normal to break the barriers.

He said the scholarship declares the determination of pushing women to take leading roles in the mining sector.

 MIIF-UMaT WomCom Scholarship Scheme

The Scholarship for Women from Mining Communities (WomCom) stems from MIIF’s strategy to help develop the human capital in the mining sector and with dedication to cultivating diversity, equality, and empowerment in the sector.

Traditionally dominated by males, MIIF intends to change that narrative by sponsoring the training of a more inclusive workforce, which ultimately will inure to the benefit of the mining industry and Ghana as a whole.

The scholarship scheme tailored for females is a deliberate effort to tackle gender disparity and open avenues for bright and talented females to excel in stem and mining engineering sectors.

This scholarship scheme is specifically meant for needy undergraduate and postgraduate female students who are indigenes of mining communities in Ghana pursuing or desirous of pursuing mining engineering or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related programs at the University of Mines and Technology, UMaT, Ghana.
