Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange Unveiled Amid Akufo-Addo’s Dig at Mahama

During the unveiling of the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took a sharp dig at his political rival, NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, over his much-talked-about 24-hour policy.

Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic party supporters, Akufo-Addo didn’t mince words, accusing Mahama of being all talk and no substance. Delivered in fluent Ga, his remarks drew laughter and applause from the audience, many of whom waved NPP flags in a show of solidarity.

“Mahama knows how to talk big, but when you ask him to explain this 24-hour policy, he stumbles,” Akufo-Addo said.

“That’s the difference between empty promises and real leadership.” The crowd erupted, clearly enjoying the jab. He went on to extol the qualities of his vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as “tried and tested.”

Akufo-Addo assured the gathering that Bawumia’s proven competence and results-oriented leadership were the keys to taking Ghana to the next level.

The event, however, was not only a political battlefield but also a moment to honour the legacy of Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi-Lamptey, one of Ghana’s most revered freedom fighters.

As a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and part of the legendary “Big Six,” Obetsebi-Lamptey’s contributions to Ghana’s independence struggle were monumental.

The interchange, which bears his name, is seen as a significant infrastructure development meant to ease traffic congestion and boost economic activities in Accra.

Obetsebi-Lamptey’s legacy, though, extends far beyond the roads of Ghana’s capital. He symbolized the tenacity and hope that inspired a nation to break free from colonial rule.

While the focus of the event was on celebrating progress and legacy, Akufo-Addo’s remarks about Mahama’s 24-hour policy kept the political tension palpable.

The policy, which Mahama has pitched as a plan to improve efficiency in governance, has drawn criticism for its vagueness. Many, including Akufo-Addo, believe it lacks depth and practical detail.

“How can you sell an idea to the people without explaining how it works?” an attendee, Adjeley Mensah, remarked after the president’s speech. “That’s the difference between Mahama and leaders like Akufo-Addo.”
