The 2024 Ghana Rugby League 9s wrapped up with a burst of excitement on Sunday (27 October), as Nungua Tigers staged a thrilling upset to dethrone defending champions Skolars in the men’s final at the University of Ghana’s (UG) Rugby Field.
This October tournament captivated fans each Sunday, witnessing intense battles, emerging talents, and powerful community support.
The Tigers’ journey to the title began with a dominant 12-0 victory over Accra Majestics, followed by resounding wins over the Bulls (27-12) and UG Titans (30-0).
However, their winning streak was halted in a 0-13 defeat to the undefeated Skolars.
Not ones to back down, the Tigers quickly rebounded, overcoming the Accra Panthers (14-0) to close the first round on a high.
In the second round, the Tigers picked up where they left off, defeating Accra Majestics and UG Titans (30-0), with a hard-fought 11-11 draw against the Bulls.
Skolars once again proved a challenge, handing the Tigers another loss (10-0). Despite this setback, the Tigers roared back with victories over the Accra Panthers (10-7) and Bulls (34-4), earning them a spot in the final showdown against their formidable rivals, Skolars.
Having lost twice to Skolars, the Tigers entered the final as underdogs. Yet, standout performances from Gideon Klugey, who led the tournament with 11 tries, conversion ace Kofi Montchon, who notched up 20 conversions, and Godwin Amamoo helped the Tigers defy expectations, defeating Skolars 13-10 to clinch the men’s title.
The Tigers’ triumph wasn’t limited to the men’s division. Their women’s team also made an impressive run to the final, where they faced reigning champions Accra Panthers.
In a fiercely contested match, the Panthers held onto their title, defeating the Tigers 12-0. Margaret Tuffour of the Panthers and the Tigers’ Ivy Benyah stood out, each scoring five tries, with Benyah also leading in conversions.
Meanwhile, in the youth division, Accra Panthers’ youth team marked their Rugby League 9s debut with an emphatic 12-0 win over Accra Majestics in the final.
Young talents like Kofi Adusei and Jamal Yussif shone brightly, each scoring three tries, signalling a promising future for rugby league in Ghana.
Beyond the action on the field, the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) took the event to new heights through partnerships, notably with the Esports Association, Ghana (EAG), bringing rugby league into the digital arena.
A collaboration with Life Healthcare also offered fans and players free breast screenings, emphasising the RLFG’s commitment to community health.
Reflecting on the tournament, RLFG Regional Manager Riddick Alibah said, “This tournament represents the strength of our players and the power of our community.”
“We’re thrilled to blend rugby league with health initiatives, bringing our fans and players together for a purpose greater than sport.”
This year’s Rugby League 9s weren’t just about sport; it was a celebration of unity, resilience, and community health, showcasing the rapid growth of rugby league across Ghana’s men’s, women’s, and youth divisions.
