Kumasi: Fire ravages Racecourse Market, traders appeal for immediate support

A fierce fire broke out at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi early Tuesday morning, consuming unspecified shops and devastating the livelihoods of traders.

The blaze, which started around midnight, mainly affected shops constructed from metal containers and wood.

These housed businesses selling watermelons, grapes, and other goods, as well as cold storage facilities.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly, deploying three fire engines to combat the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.

“We got a call yesterday [December 16] that this place was up in flames. We thought it was the other side because they sell food there. Another piece of information reached us that it is our place, but it is watermelon we sell.

“Our next three shops sell apples. They have a cold room where they keep their apples. There is also a cold store behind us. The Ghana National Fire Service had almost extinguished the fire when we arrived. All our goods are burnt”, one of the affected victims told reporters.

“I had GH¢15,000 worth of goods in there. I also had some personal belongings there. We are pleading with the public to assist us with any form of support they can.”

The leader of the Watermelon Sellers Association, Naomi Serwaa, appealed to the government and other philanthropists to come to their aid.

The latest brings to two the number of fire incidents reported in the Ashanti Region after three people were killed in Obuasi last Friday. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
