NRSA in North East region aims to prevent election-year fatalities

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has gathered key stakeholders in Nalerigu to address growing road safety concerns in the North East Region.

The meeting, held on Wednesday (6 November) at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), focused on the theme “Improving Road Safety Management in North East; The Role of the Stakeholder.”

With the 2024 elections fast approaching, the NRSA’s goal is clear: to reduce road-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities before, during, and after the elections.

Patrick Osei Tutu, the acting head of NRSA for the North East, emphasised the critical role of collaboration in improving road safety.

He urged participants to adopt best practices and ensure the effective implementation of a road safety code tailored to political activities.

“We are here as a stakeholder to deliberate on how to improve road safety management in the region,” Osei Tutu said.

“The objective of today’s meeting is to look at road safety code of practice for political activities and other road safety challenges identified in the region.”

“The broad objective of the road safety code is to reduce the road traffic crisis, injuries, and deaths (the CIDs) before, during, and after the election by raising awareness on the importance of observing best road safety practices [and] promoting mainstream road safety in all political activities, building strong relationships between political parties [and] road safety players.”

The event was supported by Nantogma Adam, Director of Administration at the RCC, who read a speech on behalf of the North East Regional Minister Yidana Zakaria

Adam stressed the urgency of collaborative efforts to prevent the sharp rise in road accidents, particularly during the festive season and election periods.

“This stakeholder engagement meeting is a lifesaving meeting; that is why it is important to pay serious attention to every detail,” Adam noted.

“Available records and reliable data indicate that road accident increases during the end of the year, during Christmas, and during election year.”

“That is why this meeting is very important to enable us to discuss the causes of road accidents and take the necessary measures to protect and preserve lives before, during, and after these important events.”

Adam further urged attendees to be proactive in spreading road safety awareness.

“You are going to be the agents of change, and therefore you are expected to inform [and] educate the people about the causes of accidents and how we can avoid the unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.

Road safety remains a pressing concern in the region. According to NRSA data, the North East recorded 26 road fatalities between January and September 2024, a slight improvement compared to the 33 deaths during the same period in 2023.
