NPP Walewale primary: Abdul Kabiru to contest again, urges NEC to ensure clean register

Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru, technical advisor to Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has announced his intention to contest in the Walewale Constituency NPP primaries rerun, following the Tamale High Court ruling.

Previously, he won the primaries on 27 January 2024, with 345 votes, beating incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera, who received 338 votes.

However, Hajia Lariba filed an ex-parte motion on 29 January 2024, seeking an injunction to prevent Dr. Mahama from being declared the parliamentary candidate.

The Tamale High Court, presided by Justice Richard Kogyapwah, ordered a rerun on 2 September 2024, with reasons to be provided on 12 September 2024.

Kabiru has declared his intention to contest again and has urged the NPP National Executive Council (NEC) to ensure a clean register before the election.

Speaking to Asaase News after meeting with his supporters Mahama said, “Basically, this meeting was a meeting of the youth, women, and delegates of the people of the greater Walewale Constituency. The people have so stated that we need to have representation and they are not backing down on their earliest stands. They are still of the view that I am the duly elected candidate and they want to reaffirm that on the 8 September,” he said.

He added that “So they (his supporters) have encouraged me, they have actually directed me to pick the nomination form and to contest the elections again,” he declared.

He accordingly appealed to the NPP National Executive Council (NEC) to ensure the voters’ register is cleaned up before the election day on Sunday ( 8 September 2024) to prevent potential legal challenges from disgruntled losers.

“This time around, the national executives must ensure that we have a very clean register so that no one will run to court under the refuge of dead people in the register after they have lost the elections,” he urged NEC.

Kabiru in the same interview, added that his main aim is to secure the Walewale seat for the NPP flagbearer, making it a safer seat for the party.

“I want to state clearly that under no circumstances will I do anything that will jeopardise the future and the relevance of the Walewale Constituency in the body politics of Ghana, under no circumstance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera, Kabiru’s main rival in the previous election, has confirmed to Asaase News, that she will also vie for the position again.

The Walewale election is scheduled to come on Sunday ( 8 September 2024).
