Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the director of communications for the campaign team of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed optimism about the voter turnout, which he described as “very encouraging.”
He has urged citizens who have not yet cast their votes to head to their respective polling stations, emphasising the importance of participating in this democratic exercise.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday (7 December), Aboagye commended the Electoral Commission and the security agencies for ensuring a smooth and largely peaceful electoral process so far.
Aboagye highlighted the reduction in long queues, attributing this improvement to the commission’s decision to decrease the number of voters allocated to each polling station.
According to him, this adjustment has significantly improved voter experience and demonstrated progress in Ghana’s electoral processes.
However, Aboagye raised concerns about isolated incidents of electoral malpractice. He reported that an electoral officer in Kintampo South was caught issuing tampered ballot papers that excluded Dr. Bawumia’s name and image.
He disclosed that the officer had distributed 15 such papers before vigilant NPP agents uncovered the irregularity.
The police have since arrested the officer, identified as Joseph Derry, and investigations are underway. The NPP, Aboagye said, views this act as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters and undermine the integrity of the election.
In a separate incident in the Atwima Kwanwoma constituency, Aboagye alleged that Charles Fokuo, the son of the NDC constituency youth organiser, was apprehended with 76 thumbprinted ballot papers in favour of the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
He claimed that Fokuo attempted to stuff the ballot box with these papers before being intercepted by security personnel.
Aboagye criticised the actions as part of what he described as a broader strategy by the NDC to manipulate the elections, asserting that the NPP’s robust monitoring mechanisms have been instrumental in uncovering such schemes.
While acknowledging these challenges, Aboagye called for vigilance among Ghanaians to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. He appealed to citizens to report any suspicious activities and reassured them that the NPP remains committed to ensuring a transparent and credible election.
In closing, he warned individuals engaged in electoral misconduct that they would face the full force of the law, urging all stakeholders to act responsibly in upholding Ghana’s democratic values.
Despite these allegations, Aboagye maintained that the overall voting process has been peaceful and expressed hope for a smooth conclusion to the exercise.
He reiterated the NPP’s confidence in the vigilance of the Electoral Commission, the security agencies, and party representatives across polling stations, underscoring the importance of collective effort in protecting the sanctity of the polls.
As the day progresses, the NPP has urged voters to remain calm and resolute, emphasising that every vote counts in shaping the future of the nation.
