NPP condemns post-election violence, calls for calm and accountability

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as a wave of violence and lawlessness allegedly carried out by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following Ghana’s 7 December elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the national youth organiser of the party, Salam Mustapha accused the NDC of undermining the country’s democratic processes and threatening the peace and stability that Ghana has worked hard to achieve under the Fourth Republic.

According to Mustapha, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, demonstrated statesmanship by conceding defeat to John Mahama only hours after polls closed, prioritising national unity over partisan interest. He contrasted this gesture with what he described as the NDC’s deliberate attempts to create chaos in constituencies where results were still being finalised.

Mustapha detailed several violent incidents that he attributed to NDC supporters. In the Okaikwei North constituency, armed individuals allegedly attacked the NPP’s party office, destroying vehicles and property. In Madina, an NPP election operations center was reportedly stormed by NDC supporters accusing the party of vote manipulation. Other instances of violence included the burning of election materials in constituencies like Suhum and Akwatia, as well as confrontations with military personnel in Obuasi East.

The Youth Organizer also pointed to incidents of looting, including reports from Ayawaso North, where freezers and other items were allegedly stolen from public offices. He claimed the NDC’s actions were a calculated effort to provoke security forces and disrupt the peaceful electoral process.

Salam Mustapha called for immediate action from the Ghana Police Service to restore law and order at collation centers and ensure the safety of Electoral Commission officials and election materials. He also urged the Electoral Commission to stand firm in executing its mandate without intimidation.

Addressing the president-elect, John Mahama, the national youth organiser of the NPP, demanded that he instruct his supporters to refrain from violence and respect the democratic process. He warned that continued provocations could lead to reactions that would jeopardize the nation’s peace and stability.

Concluding his address, Mustapha appealed to all Ghanaians to prioritise national unity and protect the democracy that has been the bedrock of the country’s progress.

He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to peace but cautioned that the party would not tolerate any further attacks on its members or properties.

The call for calm comes as tensions remain high in several constituencies where election results are yet to be finalized. Both the NPP and security agencies are working to ensure that the situation does not escalate further.
