GHS investigates suspected cases of dengue fever

Ghana Health Service says it is investigating some suspected cases of dengue fever.

This is after the detection of some cases in Lome, Togo.

The director of public health at the GHS, Dr Franklyn Asiedu Bekoe, said the suspected cases are currently being tested in the laboratories.

“We have received reports of suspected cases recently and are currently running tests on samples in the lab,” he told Asaase News.

Dr Bekoe, however, noted that Ghana has a history of dengue fever cases. “We are awaiting the outcome of the test to know what the situation will be, but it’s not an unusual occurrence to have cases in the country”.

“We’ve had some cases in the past, and our systems are also equipped to detect such cases,” he added. Though the number of cases has not been disclosed, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has implemented some measures to address the situation.

Dengue is an acute fever caused by a virus.

Dr. Bekoe explained that there are similarities between dengue fever and malaria.

The only way to differentiate between the two infections in the early stages is by testing.

“Some people can have the infection but will not show any symptoms. Others will also show the usual malaria symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, or headache, the difference is that when you run a malaria test, it will be negative despite the symptoms.” he noted.

Meanwhile, Asaase News’s Togo correspondent Ekoue Blame reports that public awareness campaigns are ongoing.
