NEDCo confiscates over 200 sub-standard meters on Kenyase-Atronie road

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has issued a warning to its customers regarding the distribution and sale of fake and sub-standard energy metres.

This follows the confiscation of over 200 such metres on the Kenyase-Atronie road during a police inspection in the Sunyani Metropolis.

According to a press statement signed by Maxwell Kotoka, manager of Corporate Communications, the meters were found to be sourced from neighbouring countries, specifically Togo and Côte d’Ivoire.

These meters had not been tested or calibrated by NEDCo, and did they meet the standards set by the Energy Commission and Ghana Standards Authority.

The statement highlights that these sub-standard meters pose serious risks, including potential fire hazards, transformer damage, prolonged outages, and increased distribution losses. These issues affect both consumers and NEDCo.

NEDCo emphasises that it is illegal to import meters without the proper approvals from the Energy Commission and other regulatory bodies. Additionally, consumers should only obtain meters from licensed distribution companies such as NEDCO and ECG.

The company will pursue legal action against anyone involved in the distribution, sale, or transportation of these sub-standard meters.

NEDCo advises the public to avoid purchasing such meters and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or NEDCo office.
