NDC’s conduct in Parliament is a threat to Ghana’s democracy- Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader, Hon Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has vehemently criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their conduct during a parliamentary session on Thursday, October 17.

His remarks at a press conference on Friday, October 18, 2024, come in the wake of heightened tensions between the two parties, which have escalated over the handling of parliamentary proceedings.

The lawmaker expressed his discontent with the NDC’s conduct, stating, “In fact, Mr. Speaker himself, despite doing their bidding, fell short of declaring them to be the Majority and still addresses me as Majority Leader.” His comments reflect a deep frustration with what he perceives as the NDC’s attempts to undermine the NPP’s standing in Parliament. He argued that the NDC’s behavior was not only mischievous but also indicative of a deeper malevolence.

“What they did in Parliament yesterday was evil,” he declared, underscoring his belief that the NDC’s actions were not just politically motivated but also morally reprehensible. This rhetoric points to the charged atmosphere in Parliament, where both parties have been grappling for control and influence, often leading to heated exchanges and accusations.

Afenyo-Markin went on to defend the NPP’s decision to leave the parliamentary chamber during the contentious session. “We are law-abiding citizens, that is why we calmly left the chamber for them,” he explained, suggesting that the NPP’s exit was a strategic move aimed at maintaining order and decorum amidst the chaos. He emphasized their commitment to upholding democratic principles, stating, “We know that if we make our case well in court, the court will make a determination that would advance the cause of our democracy.”
