NDC clarifies ‘cash spraying’ incident at Akamugri Atanga’s welcome durbar

The Upper East Regional Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a clarification regarding recent media reports that misrepresented events during the welcome durbar held for newly appointed Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

The durbar, a culturally significant event, was held in Pwalugu and was intended to usher the minister into the region.

The celebration included a grand procession from Pwalugu to Bolgatanga, with traditional drumming, singing, and dancing, reflecting the local customs and heritage.

It brought together people from various political backgrounds, ethnic groups, and communities to celebrate Hon. Atanga’s appointment.

However, media reports suggested that the minister had engaged in an act of extravagant cash spraying during the durbar, which the NDC’s regional communication team has now clarified.

According to the statement, it is customary in the Upper East Region for attendees to offer money to traditional performers as a token of appreciation.

These performers, who are not pre-paid, rely on such contributions during cultural events.

The NDC clarified that the money given to the performers was not Hon. Atanga’s personal funds, but was handed to him by the NDC Regional Vice Chairman, Mr. Issaka Haruna.

The total amount involved was GHC100 in GHC5 notes.

The statement further explained that the harmattan winds caused the notes to scatter briefly, leading to an unintended visual impression of cash spraying. The NDC stressed that only Ghanaian cedi notes were used, and no foreign currency was involved in the transaction.

The Bureau expressed regret over the misinterpretation, urging the media to verify facts before disseminating narratives that could be misleading.

They reaffirmed that the portrayal of the incident as an extravagant display was inaccurate and inconsistent with Hon. Atanga’s character.

The statement emphasized that Hon. Atanga is widely known for his humility and modesty, and any suggestion of opulence was not reflective of his leadership values.

The NDC also took the opportunity to reaffirm Hon. Atanga’s commitment to responsible leadership and prudent governance, distancing him from any notions of extravagant display.
