Former Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has openly attributed his loss in the 2024 parliamentary elections to his reassignment to the Office of the President, expressing that it had a significant impact on his relationship with his constituents.

While the defeat in the Nandom constituency came as a blow, Dery’s reflections on the political consequences of his reshuffling shed light on the delicate balance between national politics and local support.

Dery, who has served as a member of parliament for many years, noted that his reassignment, although maintaining his status as a Cabinet Minister, shifted the public’s perception of his influence.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal at my level because the President assured me and I continued to serve as a Cabinet Minister. But when I returned home, the narrative had changed,” he shared on Joy News in an interview.

His comments reveal how local perceptions often shape political outcomes, even when there are no formal changes to one’s power at the national level.

In the eyes of many in Nandom, Dery’s shift to the Office of the President was a sign of diminished power.

“They gave me a name… that means my power was finished,” he said, highlighting how the loss of the Interior Ministry was seen by his community as a significant loss of political clout.

The local dynamics, where a politician’s direct connection to power is closely scrutinized, played a key role in the political reality he faced.

This disconnect between the official facts and the public’s perception reflects the challenges politicians face when their image of influence is suddenly called into question.
