Some irate youth perceived to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Techiman South constituency, Sunday afternoon besieged the collation centre, insisting that the Electoral Commission (EC) declares the outcome of the parliamentary elections.

Wielding firearms and other offensive instruments, the visibly angry supporters invaded the collation centre at the Techiman Divisional Police Headquarters, and destroyed parts of the police building, breaking the glass windows of the station.

They also set ablaze all the election materials including the EC certified results and fired sporadic gunshots.

The irate supporters also broke into an office at the police headquarters where the police had kept Mr Martin Adjei Korsah, the incumbent Member of Parliament and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Oduro Amaning, the Deputy Bono East Regional Police Commander for safety.

The timely arrival of some military personnel who rescued them saved the situation, however some police personnel at the command sustained some injuries.

Their action, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered was to register their displeasure and protest against the delay in the declaration of the results,  which they believed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Police intended to manipulate in favour of Mr Korsah, the incumbent MP.

In an interview, William Bamfo-Apori, the Techiman South Electoral Officer told the GNA that “we can’t declare the parliamentary results now because there are no results to declare,” saying the raiders had brunt all the election materials.

Calm has since returned to the scene.
