Medical lab scientists urged to embrace AI and digital tech to revolutionise healthcare

Medical laboratory scientists in Ghana have been called to embrace the power of artificial intelligence (AI), cutting-edge diagnostics, and digital technologies to elevate the quality and efficiency of lab services nationwide.

Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani, the outgoing President of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), made a compelling case for this shift, emphasising its potential to transform healthcare outcomes for Ghanaians.

Speaking at the opening of the 2024 GAMLS Annual National Congress in Sunyani on Wednesday (6 November), Dr. Rahamani emphasised that integrating advanced diagnostics and automation would bolster the country’s healthcare system.

“By integrating new diagnostic methods, automation, AI, and digital tools, we can significantly improve the efficiency, accuracy, and overall quality of our laboratory services,” he said.

“These advancements are crucial in achieving better health outcomes for the people of Ghana and reinforcing the strength of our healthcare system.”

However, he also called for commitment from medical professionals to adapt to these technologies with a focus on patient-centred care.

The event, which brought together GAMLS members from all 16 regions of Ghana, saw a strong emphasis on the ethical considerations surrounding AI adoption.

Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the need for caution in integrating AI into medical practices.

“The introduction of AI in laboratory services should be approached carefully,” she advised.

“It is essential that we use this technology ethically, transparently, and with appropriate safeguards to ensure patient privacy and data security.”

Her remarks emphasised the delicate balance between innovation and ethics, especially in healthcare, where confidentiality is paramount.

In his keynote address, Dr. Laud Anthony Basi, a lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), addressed the urgent need for laboratory scientists to keep pace with the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

He stressed the vital role that diagnostic services play, especially in resource-limited settings like Ghana.

“Improving access to diagnostic tools could save millions of lives, particularly in countries like Ghana,” Dr. Basi noted.

“The role of laboratory scientists is more crucial than ever as we work to make these tools more accessible to all.”

He urged scientists to embrace innovation, which could be transformative for health services across the country.

The three-day congress, held under the theme “Enhancing Medical Laboratory Practice through Innovative Technologies,” not only aimed to explore how technological advancements can reshape laboratory services but also to address the challenges facing the association.

The event featured discussions on leadership transitions, with elections set to determine new executives.

The gathering drew a mix of healthcare experts, regional leaders, and traditional authorities, including members of the Dormaa Traditional Council.
