Manchester United appoint Rúben Amorim as head coach

Manchester United have appointed Portuguese tactician Rúben Amorim as their new head coach, replacing Erik ten Hag. 

The Sporting Clube de Portugal manager, who has garnered a reputation as one of the most exciting young coaches in European football, will join the Red Devils on Monday (11 November), after signing a three-year contract that runs until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.

In a club statement, Manchester United lauded Amorim’s impressive track record: “Rúben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.”

“Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”

This announcement marks a new chapter for the club as they seek to climb back up the Premier League standings.

Amorim’s appointment follows the dismissal of Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, who parted ways with the club last month after a string of disappointing results. 

The Portuguese tactician is expected to take the helm for his first match against Ipswich on Sunday (24 November).

To secure Amorim’s early release from his 30-day notice period, Manchester United reportedly paid Sporting an additional €1 million on top of his €10 million exit clause. 

Until Amorim arrives, interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to lead the team, aiming to steady the ship during this transitional period.
