Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been declared the winner of the Tema Central parliamentary election following a re-collation process that was briefly halted due to disruptions.
The Returning Officer paused the re-collation after the absence of representatives from all political parties, preventing the process from continuing smoothly.
The tension began when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ebi Bright, demanded a complete re-collation of votes from all polling stations, citing a court order.
Bright insisted that the Electoral Commission (EC) should start the entire process anew, rather than resume from where it had previously stopped.
Tempers flared as Bright, along with South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, voiced their dissatisfaction with the EC’s decision not to fully re-collate the votes.
Both NDC representatives stormed out of the collation center in protest, leaving the process stalled for a period.
Meanwhile, the re-collation of results for the Obuasi East constituency confirmed NPP’s Patrick Boakye Yiadom as the winner by a slim 19-vote margin.
Boakye Yiadom secured 18,558 votes, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Samuel Aboagye of the NDC, who received 18,539 votes.
Independent candidate Adjei Owusu Afriyie trailed with 424 votes.
The re-collation of these two constituencies is part of a broader process involving nine constituencies undergoing review today.
The EC ordered the re-collation following disputes over procedural irregularities in the initial vote count.
Amid the ongoing process, heavy security has been deployed at the Greater Accra Electoral Commission office to maintain order and ensure the smooth continuation of the re-collation.
