John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has pledged to prioritise a “made in Ghana” agenda if elected in the upcoming general elections on 7 December.
During the launch of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto in Winneba, Central Region, on Saturday (24 August), Mahama outlined his plans to bolster local production.
He emphasised that his administration would prioritise purchasing domestically produced goods, leveraging the government’s budget to stimulate the local economy.
“We’ll implement a made-in-Ghana agenda for the production and consumption of made-in-Ghana goods. Government is going to use its budget to buy made-in-Ghana goods first; it’s only when you can’t get that good that you will be allowed to buy a foreign product,” Mahama stated.
“If the good is produced in Ghana, you must buy it first and so we are going to use government’s financial muscle to encourage local production of goods and services.”
He also added that foreign companies seeking to sell their products in Ghana would be required to establish manufacturing facilities within the country.
“If you are a foreign industry and you want us to buy your goods, come and establish the factory here and produce what you want us to buy here,” Mahama said.
