The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to revive the concept of school farms across the country as part of its broader education and agricultural policy, which aims to boost food security and support the feeding of students in schools.
This initiative was announced by the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, during the launch of the NDC’s “Game Changer” manifesto for the upcoming December elections.
The programme seeks to integrate agriculture into the school curriculum by establishing farms within educational institutions. These farms will be operated by the schools, with their produce being used to feed the students.
According to Mahama, the revival of school farms will not only help reduce the cost burden of school feeding programmes but will also provide students with hands-on agricultural experience, which could potentially stimulate interest in farming as a career path.
“The school farm concept is more than just a feeding initiative. It is about teaching students the value of agriculture and equipping them with the knowledge and skills to sustain themselves and their communities in the future,” Mahama said during the manifesto launch.
“The produce from these farms will be used to support the school feeding programmes, ensuring that students receive nutritious meals while also learning to be self-reliant.”
The NDC believes that by leveraging the potential of school farms, the programme can foster a sustainable and cost-effective solution to the challenges facing the national school feeding programme, which has come under strain due to financial constraints.
The school farms initiative, according to Mahama, will help bridge this gap by making schools more self-sufficient in their food supply.
