Mahama urges Ayorkor Botchwey to make Africa proud as secretary general of Commonwealth

Former president John Mahama has congratulated Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey following her election as secretary-general of the Commonwealth.

Ayorkor Botchwey was elected secretary general of the Commonwealth at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa.

At 61, the seasoned diplomat faced stiff competition from two other African contenders- Lesotho’s former trade minister Joshua Phoho Setipa and Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mamadou Tangara.

Reacting to the development on Facebook on Tuesday( 29 October), Mahama said Ayorkor Botchwey will make Ghana and Africa proud in her new role.

”Congratulations Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on your election as secretary general of the Commonwealth. You will be joining a special group of diplomats to help make the Commonwealth and the world a better place.”

”I am particularly excited that after Patricia Scotland, we have another distinguished female at the head of the Commonwealth. Make Ghana and Africa proud with your leadership of the 56-member organisation,” Mahama said.
