Mahama terminates Northern Region tour to curb turmoil in Volta Region, says NPP executive

John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been compelled to stop his Northern regional tour in order to save the NDC in the Volta Region.

The former president, a source within the NPP has disclosed, is under intense pressure from the Volta regional executives of the NDC to come quickly and save them from the inroads that the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has made in the region.

“The Volta Region is falling into the hands of the NPP. This is very worrying, and we have appealed to President Mahama to end his tour in the North and come here, else, we are in trouble,” said an insider who is familiar with ongoing discussions in the NDC.

“The NPP has done a lot of work in the region, including roads, schools, markets and other infrastructure. Just look at the Eastern Corridor road and the work they have done.

“The people are happy with these projects, and they know that if they don’t do anything about this, their numbers will go down considerably,” the source added.

Northern uproar

Even though the NPP’s presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, is yet to campaign in the Volta Region, his regional constituency and other executives are doing well, propagating their achievements.

“It is believed that if Mahama doesn’t precede Bawumia and waits for the vice-president to come here to campaign before him, what has happened to us in the five regions of the North will happen to us in the Volta Region” a regional NPP top gun in the Volta Region indicated.

The NDC’s flagbearer, according to NPP insiders in the Volta Region, has heeded the call to cancel his Northern tour in order to curb the danger that is looming in Volta.

“The NDC is collapsing here, and the party’s rank and file believes that Mahama must come and save them lest they … suffer the most humiliating defeat in the history of the Volta Region,” the source said.

“The MP for Hohoe, [John Peter] Amewu, has done so much for his people within the past few years as compared to the NDC MPs in the region. This has made the traditional NDC supporters angry.

“They are saying that they have been taken for granted for the many years they have been voting for the NDC.

“The NDC is likely to lose additional seats to the NPP in the region, looking at what Amewu has done for his people in the region,” another NPP source said.
