Legal Tussle : ‘Skirt and blouse’ vote to hit Walewale NPP

The New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Walewale Constituency of the North East Region is gradually losing grips of the seat following the protracted legal tussle over the outcome of the January 27, 2024 Parliamentary Primaries.

Clash of egos and power play coupled with irreconcilable differences MyNewsGh.com has gathered, is currently worsening the situation in the home constituency of the NPP Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with no hope in sight.

Political pundits have envisaged that if the matter is not resolved by a month’s time, the NPP per the regulations of the Electoral Commission may not be able to present a candidate for the 2024 polls after winning the seat three times.

The murky situation which sees no end, is gradually also whipping up the spirit of ‘Skirt and blouse’ vote in the constituency that is expected to lead the way for the rest of the country in view of the torch bearer’s attachment.

It is unclear if the internal wranglings is among reasons Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has excluded the constituency in his two-day tour of the North East Regio where he kickstarted his nationwide campaign tour.

NPP supporters in the area who feel frustrated and confused about the development, have started threatening a “Skirt and blouse” vote in 2024 after the case was adjourned to July 18, 2024 by a Tamale High Court.

Background

Hajia Lariba Zuwera Abudu in January this year,  took legal action against her contender, Dr. Abdul-Karibu Tia Mahama, after experiencing a supposed defeat in the party’s parliamentary primary.

The contentious primary came to a close on January 27, 2024, with Dr. Mahama, a Technical Advisor to the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia being declared the victor.

Dr. Mahama, a presidential staffer, secured the primary win with a total of 343 votes. Meanwhile, Lariba Zuwera Abudu, who at the time also served as the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister, fell short with 334 votes.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, Lariba Zuwera Abudu approached the Tamale High Court on January 29, 2024, and filed a motion ex-parte, challenging the results of the primary election.

The motion aimed to stop Dr Tia Mahama from assuming the position of the NPP’s Parliamentary candidate-elect for the Walewale constituency.

The defeated MP is also calling for a recount of the votes, especially with the 13 rejected ballots.

The matter has been pending in a Tamale High Court ever since.
