Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe has voiced his strong disapproval of the decision by Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare to release Oheneba Nana Asiedu, the Wontumi FM presenter who had been detained for spreading false information in breach of Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
In a candid discussion on Okay FM, Tamakloe expressed his belief that there is no justifiable reason for allowing Asiedu to evade the serious consequences of his actions.
“What example are we setting here? A person spreads lies that undermine the fabric of our society, and instead of facing the law, he is set free. This is not how justice is supposed to work,” Tamakloe remarked.
The lawyer, who had initially supported IGP Dampare’s appointment, said that he was optimistic about the new leadership at the Police Service.
“When Dampare was appointed, I was among those who thought his leadership would bring about a transformation. He was charismatic, approachable, and seemed to understand the importance of maintaining law and order,” Tamakloe recalled.
However, Tamakloe expressed disappointment in how the IGP’s leadership seems to have deviated from its original course.
“But now, I’m afraid to say, he’s lost his moral compass. He’s allowed personal interests and external pressures to cloud his judgment, and that’s not the kind of leadership we need from our police force,” he added.
