Running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has clarified his comments on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah he made during his inaugural speech.
Speaking at his official unveiling event at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh said: Since independence in 1957, no president has helped Ghana as much as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 to now, not even your Kwame Nkrumah has moved Ghana forward and protected it like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.
His comment sparked outrage on social media and later in traditional media, considering how revered the first president of the country was.
But during his visit to the Omanhene of Wasa Amenfi Traditional Council, Tetrete Okuamoah Sakyim II, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh indicated that he did not mean to demean the achievements of Dr Kwame Nkrumah as Ghana’s first President after Independence.
He indicated that “What I said was misinterpreted. I said that since Ghana’s independence and since the tenure of Kwame Nkrumah, no government has worked more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. That is factual, but in Ghana’s politics, if you speak the truth, you’re labelled as arrogant, but if you massage the facts, people hail you. I’m your son and grandson, and I was brought up to be confident and fearless.”
He continued, “I was unveiled yesterday, and I told Fiifi I had to come and visit you and present myself to you. You are my grandfather, and this is where I come from. I came to visit you to seek your prayers and to ask that you continue to pray for me because this is your own and you need to continuously pray for your own”.
