Kwaku Afriyie: No need to apologise to Speaker, he’s given me the harshest punishment already

The Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Kwaku Afriyie has said there is no need to render an apology to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin over what he described as a “rude remark” during his contribution on the floor of the House.

Bagbin, on Monday, directed the Marshal to walk Afriyie, out of the House over a comment deemed as disrespectful.

Following the nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court by President Akufo-Addo, Speaker Bagbin urged the House to look into the issues of the full complement of the Supreme Court when the appointments committee presented its report on the nominees to the plenary for consideration.

However, the MP for Sefwi Wiawso, Kwaku Afriyie said it does not lie in the mouth of the Speaker to make such prejudicial comments.

Out of fury, the Speaker ordered the Marshal to take the MP out of the House.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (23 July), Afriyie said he would only apologise if what transpired between him and the Speaker reversed the punishment from the Hansard.

“I don’t think an apology is necessary, he has given me the ultimate punishment, which is a red card. He has walked me.”

“After you have given me a red card, I don’t think an apology is necessary… or will he also reverse the penalty for the records and from the Hansard that I was not sent away, if that is the compromise then I will, but I don’t think he will, so we move on,” Afriyie said.
