If Mahama trusts John Dumelo, his choice should be respected – Prof. Antwi

Governance expert Professor Enoch Antwi has shared his thoughts on President John Mahama’s first list of deputy ministerial nominees, acknowledging their potential while raising concerns about certain selections.

Speaking on 3FM’s Hot Edition with Alfred Ocansey on February 5, he specifically highlighted the appointment of actor-turned-politician John Dumelo as Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, noting that it had sparked discussions within the party.

“I thought Otokunor, who has been involved in party structures, would have taken the position, but instead it went to John Dumelo, which has raised some questions,” he said.

Professor Antwi also pointed out that some party members at the regional and branch levels are worried about appointees who may not be well-acquainted with the districts they will serve, which could pose governance challenges.

However, he defended Dumelo’s appointment, saying that leadership is about competence, not just origin.

“If President Mahama feels comfortable with someone like John Dumelo, who owns a farm and aligns with modern agricultural practices, then that choice should be respected,” he stated.

He further emphasized that the focus should be on what nominees can contribute to their respective ministries, urging all appointees to rise to the occasion. “The president has entrusted them with leadership positions, and they need to deliver. We must all be accountable for the country’s growth,” he added.
