I didn’t want to sever ties with Legon – Gyampo reflects on his new role as boss of GSA

Renowned academic and political analyst, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has shared his initial hesitation upon being appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA).

Prof. Gyampo revealed that while the appointment was unexpected, it required deep reflection before accepting the role in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues. He said having spent most of his years at Legon as a lecturer, he did not want to sever ties with them.

“It was a pleasant surprise. I had to spend almost the whole night not sleeping, thinking because I have been in the University of Ghana for almost 20 years,” he admitted.

Having built strong relationships with colleagues, superiors, and students, the transition from academia to a leadership role outside the university posed a dilemma.

The respected professor, known for his bold opinions on governance and public affairs, emphasized that his dedication to serving others played a significant role in his decision-making process.

“It was something that I had to think through—how I’m going to leave the university temporarily, take up this, and how I’m going to do so in a manner that will ensure that I don’t completely sever relationships with them but also don’t lose focus on what I’m supposed to do.”

Interestingly, Prof. Gyampo disclosed that he had been considering contesting for a leadership position within the university before his appointment to the GSA.

“I’m sure that this year I would have vied for their top position. I have become so passionate about championing the course of people I work with.”
