Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has shared a vivid recollection of his first meeting with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s current Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate.
The story, told during a live broadcast on multiple media platforms, highlighted an encounter that would later shape Ghana’s economic trajectory.
Kufuor’s narrative took listeners back to an international banking conference held at the prestigious Landmark Hotel in London. The event, which attracted global leaders and experts in finance, featured a young Bawumia as a research assistant presenting a paper.
“I didn’t know who he was then, but his delivery caught my attention,” Kufuor shared, his voice laced with nostalgia. “After his presentation, the applause in the room was overwhelming, and I knew I had to meet him.”
Approaching Bawumia after the session, Kufuor congratulated the budding economist for his insights and later discovered that he was one of the protégés of Paul Aquah, the then-Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Impressed by his intellectual prowess, Kufuor expressed his desire to work with him.
“He was young, yet his understanding of the global financial systems was remarkable,” Kufuor continued. “At that time, we were steering Ghana out of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. I saw in him a resourceful mind that could help stabilize our economy.”
Indeed, Bawumia became a key figure in Kufuor’s administration, contributing significantly alongside Paul Aquah. Their collaborative efforts not only stabilized the cedi but also laid the foundation for several economic reforms.
Kufuor praised Bawumia for his dedication and described him as a cornerstone in Ghana’s financial recovery. “His work in those years cemented his reputation as an astute economist. It was no surprise that he rose to the position he holds today,” he added.
