Henry Edmund Nana Akuffo questions Nana Kwame Bediako’s commitment to youth

President of the Association of Philosophy and Classics at the University of Ghana (APHICLAS-UG), Henry Edmund Nana Akuffo, has expressed doubts about Nana Kwame Bediako‘s commitment to the youth of Ghana.

Bediako, widely known as Cheddar, is the founder of the New Force and has been positioning himself as a champion for the younger generation. However, Akuffo remains unconvinced.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Monday (12 August), Akuffo, a vocal youth advocate, challenged Bediako’s ability to truly represent the interests of the country’s youth.

He stated that Bediako has yet to make a compelling case that would earn the trust and support of young Ghanaians.

“I do not stand in any way to condemn his political agenda, but so far, I have not been able to see at least one thing that he has said to probably convince me in his quest to ascend the throne of the government’s office,” Akuffo remarked.

He added that if Bediako is genuinely committed to the youth and has a clear vision to address their needs, it is crucial for him to communicate this effectively.

“If you are able to convince us to our expectation, for us to realise that this is someone who is truly coming for us and is going to do everything to fight for our interest, then Ghanaian youth have no other alternative than to send such a person there.”

Akuffo also criticised one of Bediako’s proposed policies, which involves dredging a sea to Kumasi, describing it as out of touch with the needs of the youth. He highlighted the high cost of tertiary education as a more pressing issue.

“But excuse me to say the only thing that he said that I have heard about his policies, of course, among other ones were sending a sea or something to [Kumasi]. I mean, we don’t need that; we are talking about young people; look at how expensive it is to go through tertiary education,” Akuffo pointed out.

The youth advocate went on to outline what young Ghanaians are seeking in a leader.

“We want that president or that candidate who will tell us that, ok, we want to build more hostels in your schools; we want to create employment opportunities for us because I don’t want to finish school and become [an] unemployed graduate because that will lead me to probably do things that might not be in the rightful place. So, these are some of the things that we young people are looking forward to.”
