Gov’t appointees contesting sitting MPs was NPP’s bane—John Boadu

Former General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has indicated that the major worry of the political party was allowing appointees to contest Members of Parliament.

He is of the view that a decision should have been taken to prevent appointees of the government from contesting members of parliament.

John Boadu, who was speaking on Kumasi-based Hello FM noted that the appointees who contested these MPs were undermined by monies they had earned from the position they were occupying.

Hence making the MPs who mostly did not get any appointments unattractive in their constituencies.

“There was supposed to be a rule that government appointees should not contest sitting MPs. Gov’t appointees should have contested in constituencies where we were orphans. That would have been the best.

People were appointed to positions, and they used the influence they had to do more than the MPs were doing in their constituencies. They undermined the MPs with their huge donations and support with logistics and this was a major worry. So when the MPs also lost the primaries, they did not even help with the campaign. Rather, they were sitting in their rooms and campaigning against the candidate and the party,” he said.
