Golden Rackets relegated from Davis Cup Group III

Ghana’s Davis Cup hopes ended in disappointment on Saturday (20 July) as the Golden Rackets were relegated to Africa Group IV following defeat to Nigeria in the final round of Group III.

The team, competing at the Tennis Centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria, required victories in both of their final matches to stand a chance of retaining their place.

A promising start against Côte d’Ivoire saw Ghana claim a clean 3-0 sweep, the country’s first full victory in the competition.

Samuel Agbesi Osei Antwi, replacing the usual Isaac Nortey, defeated Myko Yohann Himad Kouame 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, before Abraham Asaba secured a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Abdoulaziz Bationo.

The doubles pair of Osei Antwi and Lameck Bagerbaseh (making his first start at the competition) completed the whitewash with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Bationo and Kouame.

However, the hosts, Nigeria, proved too strong. Michael Emmanuel defeated the returning Nortey 6-3, 6-2, and Christopher Bulus overcame Asaba by the same scoreline to secure Nigeria’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II play-offs and condemn Ghana to relegation.

The final rubber, between the doubles pairs, was abandoned after Ghana won the first set 6-3, with Nigeria’s Wilson Oswalele Igbinovia and Uchenna Oparaoji retiring.

Below is the final standing of the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III, which was held from Monday (15 July) to Saturday (20 July):
