GBA Urges Election Integrity and Civility in Statement for 2024 Polls

As Ghana prepares for its pivotal Presidential and Parliamentary elections on Saturday, December 7, 2024, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has made a strong appeal for peace, tolerance, and adherence to the rule of law throughout the election period.

In a heartfelt statement, GBA President Mrs. Efua Ghartey, alongside National Secretary Kwaku Gyau Baffour, addressed both the public and GBA members, urging a conduct that would ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.

“Dear esteemed members and fellow citizens,” Mrs. Ghartey began, “Our beloved country, Ghana, goes to the polls to elect a President and various Parliamentarians who will lead the forward march of our nation for the next four years, commencing January 7, 2025.

“As we engage in this democratic exercise, the Ghana Bar Association appeals to all citizens to observe the utmost level of tolerance and restraint while eschewing any conduct that would contravene the electoral laws and breach the peace of our nation.”

She emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and respect for differing opinions: “An election is good when it is peaceful, free, and fair. Let us conduct ourselves with integrity, respect, and civility, even in the face of differing opinions. Remember that our actions and words reflect not only on ourselves but also on our profession as a whole.”

Addressing GBA members who are contesting the elections, Mrs. Ghartey said, “To all our members who are vying for Parliamentary seats, we commend you for bravely stepping forward to contest. We wish you the very best as you demonstrate such great dedication to public service and commitment to upholding the values of our noble profession.”

In urging citizens to exercise their voting rights, she remarked, “To those who are eligible to vote, we urge you to conscientiously exercise your franchise in fulfillment of your civic duty as patriotic citizens of this country. Your vote matters.”
