Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks, a facility that produces 75% of potable water for Tarkwa and its surrounding communities.
In a memo issued on Thursday (2 January), GWL attributed the closure to the impact of illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey, on the river Bonsa. The river serves as the primary water source for the facility but has been rendered untreatable due to severe contamination.
“We have tried all that we could but to no avail, hence the shutdown,” the memo stated.
The shutdown is expected to disrupt water supply in Tarkwa and its environs, forcing residents to rely on alternative and potentially less reliable water sources.
GWL assured the public that the river is being closely monitored for improvements in water quality. The company pledged to resume operations as soon as the water quality meets acceptable treatment standards and to provide updates on any developments.
