Galamsey is Ghana’s Drug Trade – Sam George

Ghanaian Member of Parliament(MP) for Ningo Prampram, Sam George has drawn a striking comparison between illegal mining, known as galamsey, and the drug trade, likening it to cocaine trafficking in Colombia.

He articulates a pressing concern that the galamsey crisis is not merely an environmental issue but deeply intertwined with a web of corruption involving politicians, chiefs, and security personnel.

“Galamsey is Ghana’s drug trade,” George states emphatically. “It is to Ghana what cocaine is to Colombia. There are cartels involved. These cartels have politicians, chiefs, and security personnel involved.” His assertion brings to light the severity of the galamsey menace, which has wreaked havoc on the nation’s water bodies and landscapes.

George does not hold back in pointing fingers at President Nana Akufo-Addo, stating, “NAkufoAddo bears ultimate responsibility. He has the power to arrest and deal decisively with everyone involved.”

His frustration underscores a growing sentiment among Ghanaians who feel that the government has been ineffective in tackling illegal mining and the corruption that enables it.

The MP’s statement resonates with many citizens who believe that the government’s complicity in the galamsey crisis has allowed these criminal enterprises to flourish unchecked. “If we want to deal with this canker, we need to be honest and brutally frank with the truth,” he insists.

His call for accountability reflects a deep-seated desire for genuine reform and action against those profiting from illegal activities at the expense of the environment and public health.
