University of Ghana Political Science Lecturer, Professor Ransford Gyampo has called for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to face financial consequences for the controversial National Cathedral project.
In a discussion interview on The Key Points on TV3 monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Gyampo expressed his belief that the president should be held accountable for the significant costs incurred by the state to the project.
“I had said President Akufo-Addo should be surcharged,” Gyampo remarked, adding that someone must be sued for causing financial loss to the state.
He emphasized that the president should not be exempt from facing repercussions, stating, “President Akufo-Addo himself must suffer some consequences.”
The professor’s bold stance extends to a proposal that the president’s gratuity, a financial benefit typically awarded to outgoing leaders, should be frozen and used to cover the costs associated with the National Cathedral.
“If it is possible, let us freeze his gratuity to be used in paying for the cathedral,” Gyampo suggested. He further insisted that if freezing the gratuity is insufficient to cover the losses, then legal action should be taken against the president to recover the funds.
Gyampo’s remarks come amidst ongoing public debate surrounding the National Cathedral project, which has been criticized for its ballooning costs and the use of public funds.
Calls for transparency and accountability have intensified, with many questioning the financial management and decision-making behind the venture.
The debate over the National Cathedral, once seen as a symbol of unity, has now become a focal point of contention, with demands for accountability becoming louder.
