Fallouts from 2024 defeat: NPP expels over 280 members for betrayal

The leadership of the Agona West Constituency has officially expelled several party members, effective December 16, 2024, citing their actions against the party’s interests.

The decision, announced in a Forfeiture of Membership Notice, follows a unanimous resolution made at the Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting on Sunday, December 15.

The meeting, which gathered key party stakeholders—including Constituency officers, the Municipal Chief Executive, party elders, and electoral area coordinators—was convened to address growing concerns about members undermining the party’s unity and goals.

According to the notice, the expelled members are now prohibited from holding themselves out as members of the party, using its symbols, or participating in any party activities.

“We cannot condone actions that harm the party’s integrity,” said Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the Constituency Chairman.

“These members have repeatedly demonstrated behaviour that goes against the party’s principles, including standing as independent candidates against our official parliamentary nominee and openly supporting rival political parties.

This kind of conduct undermines our collective efforts as a party.”

The expelled members were specifically accused of supporting independent candidates during the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections in Agona West, and some were even found to have openly declared their allegiance to other political groups.

These actions, according to the party leadership, led to a series of complaints from loyal members who felt their commitment to the party’s values was being compromised.

“It is disheartening to see individuals who once worked with us now working against the party,” Tanko continued. “Every election year, we see this repeated betrayal, and we cannot allow it to continue. We must protect the party’s interests and maintain unity moving forward.”

The disciplinary measures, while seen as a necessary action by the leadership, have raised some eyebrows among certain factions of the constituency, who argue that the expulsions could further divide the party ahead of future elections.

However, the majority of members support the decision, stressing that it is vital to maintain discipline and loyalty within the ranks.
