Even in the U.S. and Europe, leaders don’t take these benefits – Prof. Antwi

Prof. Enoch Antwi has compared the salary structure of Ghanaian public institution heads to those in the West, stating that even in the most advanced economies, executives do not receive such excessive benefits.

“Even in the U.S. and Europe, with the best leaders, they don’t take these kinds of benefits. Why are we doing this?” he questioned during an interview on TV3 monitored by MyNewsGH.

He called for immediate government intervention to review the salaries and benefits of public institution heads.

“I think the President should review this,” he emphasized. “I was glad yesterday when you talked about a code of conduct for all public servants—that’s great.

“But beyond that, all salaries of public institution managing directors and CEOs should be reviewed. When we make a good cut of this, we can use that money to build our roads, hospitals, and schools because this is a waste of money.”

Prof. Antwi stressed that Ghana must prioritize internal financial discipline, especially in the wake of reduced foreign aid.

“Trump said it—USAID is now a canal. Now he’s telling African leaders to go and balance their budgets without them. So we should find internal money to take care of ourselves,” he warned.

He concluded by urging the government to cut down on excessive salaries and perks for public officials.

“How do we do that? We have to cut some of these excesses so that we can have the money to build the country we all love.”
