EU applauds Bawumia’s statesmanship in 2024 elections

The European Union (EU) has commended Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his exemplary leadership and statesmanship following the 2024 general elections.

In a statement, the EU described Bawumia as an “honourable and dignified leader” for his decisive acceptance of the election results, a gesture it says demonstrates political maturity and sets a benchmark for leaders across Africa.

Bawumia, who co-chaired the EU-Ghana partnership dialogues in the past, was praised for his significant contributions to fostering collaboration between Ghana and the European Union.

The Union noted that his leadership has consistently showcased Ghana as a model of democracy on the continent.

Speaking on behalf of the EU, Ambassador to Ghana Irchad Ramiandrasoa Razaaly revealed that African electoral experts observing the elections lauded Ghana’s best practices, pledging to replicate them in their respective countries.

The EU also highlighted the seamless conduct of the elections, commending the Electoral Commission (EC) and the broader Ghanaian society for ensuring a peaceful and transparent process.

The EU observed various milestones in the lead-up to the elections, including manifesto launches, Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings, and the Peace Pact signing.

These events, it noted, emphasised Ghana’s commitment to a peaceful and credible electoral process.

On election day, 88 diplomats from EU member states, along with officials from Norway, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, visited 430 polling stations across ten regions. 

The Union’s assessment praised the professionalism of polling staff and the orderly conduct of security forces, calling it a testament to Ghana’s robust democratic framework.

The EU statement further recognised the contribution of 4,000 domestic and international observers deployed nationwide. 

It cited organisations such as the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) for their roles in safeguarding the integrity of the elections.

The EU’s endorsement adds to growing recognition of Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa, with the peaceful elections serving as a reminder of the power of unity and institutional strength in upholding democratic principles.
