Election 2024: EC limits media access to 12 outlets at regional collation centres

The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued new guidelines limiting media and observer access to collation centres during the 2024 general elections to ensure a secure and efficient process.

According to the new rules, only eight media outlets will be allowed at each constituency collation centre. At the regional collation centres, the EC has set a cap of 12 media organizations, including five TV stations and seven radio stations.

Dr Eric Bossman Asare, Deputy Commissioner of the EC, explained the decision during an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday (26 November). He stated that the restrictions aim to streamline the collation process and maintain smooth operations at both the constituency and regional levels.

“We arrived at this conclusion based on our past experiences and the nature of the collation centres. If the centres are not managed properly, they could pose challenges,” Dr. Asare said.

He further added, “The commission believes that this arrangement will help ensure a smooth collation process at both levels. By limiting media presence, we hope to avoid unnecessary disruptions and maintain order.”

Dr. Asare clarified that the limitation on media outlets is part of a broader strategy. “For example, in constituencies like Banda, Hohoe, or Bantama, having eight media outlets should be enough to provide the necessary coverage,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is kicking against this move, a close source has told Asaase News.

The Association is planning a press conference to address a number of issues including this latest development”, the source added.
