Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances in the upcoming 7 December general elections.
He appears to back the governing party’s position on the U.S. election, where the Republican Party’s Donald Trump emerged victorious.
Dr. Bawumia believes Ghanaian voters will retain the NPP based on its results-driven policies focused on economic growth and stability.
“[And so] it is clear that we are winning the election and that is why the NDC is engaging in politics of insults”, Bawumia said while addressing a charged crowd at Wiamoase in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency as his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region enters Day 3.
“We are winning this election because of our hardwork. In 2016, we promised the Ghanaian people that we will introduce Free SHS. They said it was not possible. Now 5.7 million students have access to second-cycle institutions; thanks to Free SHS”, the Vice President said as he touted the government’s achievement in the education sector.
33 policies
The vice-president also touted some of the innovative policies he initiated and implemented over the past seven years as vice-president of Ghana.
“I have initiated and championed 33 policies as vice-president and I want former President Mahama to show us the policies he championed under his tenure as vice-president,” he said.
Dr Bawumia said the country needed a leader who was innovative, consistent and hard-working to transform the country and that he had passed all the tests as Vice President to move to the next level as President to propel Ghana to a new height under the fourth industrial revolution.
Bold solutions
He used the occasion to unveil ambitious plans to prioritise the construction of three major railway lines, with the goal of accelerating the nation’s transformation if he is elected president.
“One of my priorities in terms of infrastructure development is railway expansion. This is very important for our country because if we are blessed with bauxite but lack sufficient railway lines, it creates a significant challenge. Developing our railways will greatly benefit Ghana,” he said.
“There are three main railway lines that I intend to focus on: from Tema in Greater Accra to Kumasi; then from Kumasi to Takoradi; and from Awaaso, through Nyinahin to Aduade. We will deliver these railway lines for you,” he assured. Additionally, he mentioned plans to address a short-distance railway line from Adum to Akaase.
“We are building roads, and that work is still in progress, but I will also focus on railways because that is where real transformation will come from,” he emphasized.
“The railway is essential for our country. We will extend it from Accra through Kumasi to the north, enabling us to fully exploit our bauxite, iron ore, and other natural deposits. This is what will drive the transformation we need,” he stated.
He also emphasised commitment to making the youth his top priority, promising to introduce bold, and business-friendly policies designed to create close to four million jobs.
Job creation
Central to his job creation strategy was the expansion of educational opportunities, increased student accommodation in public universities via private sector participation, introduction of scholarships for persons with disabilities at the universities, and implementation of a centralised application system for tertiary institutions.
He highlighted the importance of “protecting” and enhancing the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiatives, which had led to significant increases in student enrolment and gender parity in education.
Dr Bawumia emphasised the need to leverage public policy to stimulate economic growth, noting that three per cent of his government’s expenditure annually, about GHC30 billion, would be borne by the private sector to create fiscal space for government.
His vision includes completing the Agenda 111 hospitals, which would employ between 70,000 and 72,000 health personnel and ensuring that every district has access to healthcare services.
He also intended to support businesses through a “Buy Ghana First” policy, establish a Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Bank, and create Special Economic Zones in border towns to enhance economic activity and job creation.
Dr Bawumia also addressed issues in the agricultural sector, with plans to set up agriculture mechanisation centres in every district, and irrigation solutions for large-scale farming.
