EC condemns illegal declarations in Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North

The Electoral Commission (EC) has condemned the illegal declaration of election results in the Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North constituencies.

Speaking at press briefing on Thursday (19 December) the chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa said the declarations were made without following due process, undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

“In spite of police presence at our regional offices, the collation process was once again disrupted and taken over by political party leaders and supporters, and the results were declared for both constituencies without due process being followed,” Mensa stated.

The EC revealed that in Okaikwei Central, a winner was declared without collating results from 31 polling stations.

Similarly, in Ablekuma North, a winner was announced without results from 62 polling stations being collated.

“This is unacceptable,” Mensa emphasised, adding that the declarations made by EC staff were done under duress.

“It is important to note that the declarations made by our staff were made under threat, and the Commission considers this as illegal. Those declarations, as well as others that have gone on in other constituencies, will not be upheld by the Commission,” she added.
