In a press briefing on December 19, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana issued a stern condemnation of the illegal declaration of election results in the Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North constituencies.
The EC’s Director of Communications, Mensa, expressed grave concerns over the disruption of the collation process, stating that despite police presence at the regional offices, political party leaders and their supporters interfered with the process.
Mensa emphasized the severity of the situation, declaring, “In spite of police presence at our regional offices, the collation process was once again disrupted and taken over by political party leaders and supporters, and the results were declared for both constituencies without due process being followed.”
He did not mince words in his condemnation, adding, “This is unacceptable.” According to the EC, the declarations made by its staff in those constituencies were done under duress and threats, which the Commission considers illegal.
“The declarations made by our staff were made under threat, and the Commission considers this as illegal. Those declarations, as well as others that have gone on in other constituencies, will not be upheld by the Commission,” Mensa reiterated.
The EC’s statement highlights the serious implications of such interference, which undermines the integrity of the electoral process and the trust Ghanaians place in the Commission to conduct fair and transparent elections.
