Mac Manu to NPP: Review delegate system

The former national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu, has called for a review of the party’s delegate system, arguing that it could be a key factor in determining the party’s future electoral success.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Thursday (19 December), Mac Manu shared insights into a concern raised by a queenmother from the Western Region, who blamed the party’s recent electoral challenges on its delegate system.

In an audio message sent to him, Mac Manu stated that the queenmother claimed, “Many people did not go out to vote because of the way your delegate system works.”

“The polling station executives who constitute the delegates to elect a presidential and a parliamentary candidate were giving money.”

“The monies you give them, they go and display it to the ordinary voters and the ordinary voters realise that, ‘Herh, so we in general elections, we go and vote; you don’t appreciate us and these delegates are given this kind of treatment.’”

She urged the party to abolish the delegate system, a suggestion Mac Manu said warrants consideration.

Expanding on the issue, the former chairman explained the disconnect between the grassroots and the delegates during campaigns.

He noted, “The polling station executives who constitute the delegates work hard anyway. They kind of don’t work that much as is expected of them.”

“So the grassroots, where the party or where the voters are, there comes a disconnect, and the voters feel that these people have cheated them,” Mac Manu said.

“Because, at the end of the day, in the general elections, we are all going to cast a ballot as against them electing a candidate, be it presidential or parliamentary or even constituency chairman, and taking huge sums of money,” he added.

Mac Manu emphasised the need for the NPP to address these concerns to ensure the party remains united and its members feel valued.

“So those are areas that the party will also have to look at such that our core members will not feel that they have not been treated well,” he added.
